No CommentsLeo Frank was accused of raping and killing Mary Phagan. Frank was a Jew and Phagan was a child worker, 13 years old, in the Atlanta pencil factory that Frank was in charge of. Frank was a man who was white, northern, Jewish and an industrialist. These qualities were opposed by the locals who embraced the opposite values.
Leo Frank was tried, convicted and sentenced based mostly on the testimony of the night watchman at the factory. He was Newt Lee. Leo Frank was sentenced to death but the Governor commuted his sentence.
Before Frank could be released, around 25 men broke into the prison and kidnapped Leo Frank. They lynched him and hanged him in a tree. The death photo of Leo Frank was published as postcards and in other material. Some supported his innocence, while others condemned him.
