December 6th, 2009 | by admin |This week’s Tim Tebow eye black is John 16:33. It reads, “These things I have spoken unto you, that in me ye might have peace. In the world ye shall have tribulation: but be of good cheer; I have overcome the world.” The passage was spoken by Jesus Christ when He was speaking to his disciples regarding the coming persecution that they would face for following Him.
The full chapter of John 16 talks about the persecution that followers of Christ will face and that many of them will be martyred. It is in this chapter that Jesus promised his disciples the coming Holy Spirit. He spoke of the Holy Spirit and referred to Him as the Counselor and Comforter. Jesus also stated that when the Holy Spirit comes, he will convict mankind of sin.
During chapter 16, Jesus spoke of the coming crucifixion and that He would be leaving the apostles, but for a short time. Jesus then followed His discourse regarding his coming death, resurrection, and coming of the Holy Spirit, as well as the persecution that believers would face by stating verse 33.
