If your kids are just starting to look for a dog that will be a good constant companion, you probably would tend to first look at breed, pick out some puppies and pick the one with the character that you want. And there are hundreds of breeds to choose from – just think of the Austrian black and tan hound and the Dutch Smoushond and the MalteseMagyar Agar and the Moscow Watchdog. However, consider finding dog that fits your personality. Seek a dog that has the qualities that you had in mind and can bond with you. The age of the dog is not really a concern most of the time. Breeds may have typical characteristics, but there are exceptions to all the rules. These tips can help you find a good companion dog.

Look for a puppy or adult that has a personality that fits your own personality and your experience. If you have experience with more indepentent dogs, then a more dominant, independent dog may work for you. However, if you are not very aggressive yourself or not accustomed to working with a dog, a submissive animal will probably be a better companion for you. When you are looking at puppies, hold one and turn it over on its back. A dominant dog will fight you, trying to turn over. If it struggles, try to comfort it. If it calms down easily, it is more submissive. If it does not struggle at all, but just lies there trusting you completely, you have a very submissive dog.

A dog that is fairly quiet and requires little care is better for you if you are more laid back and more sedative yourself. If you tend to be very active you may need a more active, hyper dog to be more your style. If you spend much of the day away from home and your dog would be kenneled during that time, you should look for a dog that is a little independent and is less likely to suffer from separation anxiety.

You also want your companion dog to be intelligent and eager to please. This way you can teach it what you want it to know and it will happily learn the skills and perform them. If you are taking your dog out in public, you don’t want a fear nipper or a dog that is aggressive to strangers. Of course, this will come with socializing the dog on a regular basis, but the sharper dog will pick up cues from you when determining who is a possible enemy and who is a friend.

Dogs can be excellent companions when you have the right temperament for your needs. Also, while many feel that only puppies can be trained, this is false. Many adult dogs are saved from dog pounds every day and they are trained quite easily. The key to getting a well behaved companion is bonding with it. When you have bonded with your dog, it will do anything that you ask. They will want to anticipate what you want and will even look for new ways to communicate with you. If you are discerning, you and your dog can come up with your own language and this can give you a companion dog (even the Australian Jack Russell Terrier or Bluetick Coonhound that is a joy to be with.
