Cash for kitchen clunkers?

September 6, 2009 – 3:08 pm | by wisnuaji

Cash for kitchen clunkers. It worked for clunkers, but will it work in your kitchen?
“With everything being so expensive we’re trying to cut down on anything we can,” says Melania Wright.

Wright says she’s shopping for a new energy efficient washer because she knows in the long run it should save her money on her utility bill.

Now, the federal government is hoping to sweeten the deal. It is giving states millions of stimulus dollars to offer as rebates to people who buy appliances with the Energy Star rating.

The feds gave Florida $17.5 million, but Florida still hasn’t decided how to distribute the money.
“Unfortunately it still very unclear how the full specs of the program work and what they are,” says Best Buy appliance specialist Lee Wilson. He says today more and more people are shopping for the Energy Star-rated appliances.

“They can be a couple of hundred dollars more expensive but in the long run you actually make it back.”

-The Governor’s Energy and Climate Commission said it could refund 20 percent or more of the total cost of a star rated washer, microwave, or refrigerator.

-Florida has until October 15th to work out the details. We could see the rebates by the end of year.

-One thing we do know, you don’t have to wheel in your old fridge to qualify!

- The government hasn’t yet decided if the rebates can be applied retroactively. Don’t go to a store today to buy an energy rated appliance thinking you’re going get a rebate because you’re not guaranteed one, not yet.
