Workplace violence is defined by Wikipedia as: “incidents where people are abused, threatened or assaulted in circumstances relating to their work, involving an explicit or implicit challenge to their safety, well-being, or health.”

In 2002, there were approximately 2 million threats and assaults that occurred in the workplace, according to Pinkerton’s annual security survey. Every day, 16,400 threats are made, and 723 workers are attacked and harassed. And every year, more than 1,000 are victims of homicide, according to a report from the Salt Lake Community College.

Annie Le, a student at Yale University was a victim of workplace violence, and was murdered over a week ago allegedly by Raymond Clark, III a lab technician who was a co-worker. According to the Yale University President, in a press conference this morning, Raymond Clark has been an employee since December of 2004, and his supervisor stated that there is nothing in his employment history that indicated that there was a problem.

Most colleges and universities across the country have a workplace violence policy. Yale University also has a security awareness workplace violence policy, in addition to an intimate partner at work violence policy, which helps victims report the situation. Many schools offer training and assistance for individual situations. Speaking to a supervisor and reporting the issue is the first step, and then taking it to Human Resources so that there is a record of the situation and so that they may help to calm the situation if possible.

Although Annie Le’s friends never mentioned that she was having any problems with a co-worker, something clearly developed the day she was murdered.
